The WebKey

Having recently made a shift from an advertising agency back to my roots in software web strategy, I no longer consider myself to be “an advertiser”.  But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t a little excited today when I opened the mail and found an Amex direct mail piece with a technology I’d never seen before.

The piece, touting ZYNC from American Express, included what at first glance seemed to be a standard sample credit card.  But on second glance, it was a lot thicker.

The copy drove me to pull the card from the paper it was glued to, and I realized that I could swing a small rectangular piece of the card around to reveal 4 metal strips – it was a USB key.

American Express WebKeyThe technology, which I’d never seen before, is described in this blog post.

“The American Express webkey is extremely basic with an autorun script that launches the AccpetPay website.”

However, you can use this for whatever you like – ranging from 64MB up to 8GB – so you could link to or actually include any of the ideas that the blogger suggests –  a presentation, a demo reel, a portfolio, a vCard, a resume, or even a mini-website with links to your social networking profiles.

What an awesome leave-behind a card like this could make for a new business pitch!  As simple as it is, the possibilities for something like this are truly exciting.
