Showing More Colors in the Product Gallery

Showcasing products that come in multiple colors at the product gallery level is always a challenge.  Users are heavily dependent on imagery when making online shopping decisions, but including the same product in multiple colors as individual entries in prodct results can bore the user who isn’t interested.

I clicked through a link in an Urban Outfitters email, and when I happened to click on “more Colors”, I was surprised with what I found.  I like the way that they have included color options at the gallery level, and I think that allowing users to preview different colors without clicking through is a wise move.  I do wonder, however, why they chose to hide the color options behind the “More Colors” link, which is easy to miss.

This is my first video-supported entry, and I realize that the aspect ratio is kinda off on my screen capture.  Go easy on me.

What do you think about their approach?  What is the best way to show more colors for a product?
